This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module is a course of advanced language skills, which provides students with the opportunity to improve their Chinese linguistic competence through a systematic study and reinforcement of the main features of Chinese grammar and literary readings. It will promote students' natural Chinese syntactic and stylistic sense and improve their intensive, extensive and skim reading skills.
On completion of this module, students should be able to have a good command of modern Chinese grammar, to read and understand original modern Chinese literary texts, and to translate and paraphrase between English and written Chinese.
To write Chinese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Chinese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.
- Improved understanding and applying skills of main features of Chinese syntax;
- Improved English and Chinese translation skills including literal translation and paraphrasing;
- Improved Chinese text reading skills such as intensive reading, extensive reading, skim reading and topical sentence reading.
The course seeks to develop syntactic knowledge, linguistic and stylistic sense and reading skills of literary texts.
1. Syntactic knowledge will include systematic study of the main features of Chinese grammar such as potential complements, directional complements, modal verbs, measure words, the transposed object (ba) construction, pivot construction, verbal series, and passive voice, with student-centred exercises in English-Chinese translations.
For the English-Chinese translation, students will be guided to translate phrases and sentences which illustrate the grammatical features under discussion, and to paraphrase passages (covering narrative, corresponding, journalistic and argumentative discourses) from English to Chinese. Through these practices on Chinese grammar, the students will more consciously follow syntactic rules and their linguistic and stylistic sense in terms of intuitiveness and naturalness will be improved.
2. Literary reading will cover a number of popular short stories and essays by best-known modern Chinese writers such as Lu Xun, Zhu Ziqing and Lao She. The teaching will lay stress on linguistic and stylistic features but will also consider literary, cultural and social components presented in the literature.
